Getting the Most Out of Your General Contractor

If you are thinking about hiring a general contractor, you should read my blog before you pick up the phone or send that email. I am not a general contractor myself, but I have just finished restoring my home. It was a big project that involved working with multiple contractors over an extended period of time. Although I am not a professional, I learnt an awful lot about how to get the most out of a team of contractors and how to keep a project on schedule and under budget. I also learnt a thing or two about the work they were carrying out.

Tips for Remodeling a Small Kitchen

by Kurt Lawson

Renovating a small kitchen can be challenging. However, you can formulate a design that makes the area appear larger and work better. Here are some pointers.

Natural Light

Allowing more daylight into your kitchen will make it appear larger. Consider viable ways to do this in your room. For instance, is it possible to expand vertical windows? Alternatively, if the kitchen door faces the yard, you could place glass panels in the door frame to create an extra opening. Another method of allowing more light inside is to install a skylight. Not only will these structures bring more illumination inside, but they'll break up the solid ceiling, making the kitchen appear more open and spacious.

Reflective Surfaces

Once you've brought in additional light, make sure it stays by using materials that bounce light throughout the kitchen rather than absorb it. For example, connect a glass or mirrored backsplash. Other possibilities include glossy ceramic tiles and shiny stainless steel sinks and appliances. Matte surfaces tend to absorb more light than polished ones.

Colour

Pay attention to colour as well. Dark colours can create the illusion of a smaller room. Thus, to develop a feeling of space, use pale, neutral colours for the walls, backsplash and cabinets. If you want to use darker colours, keep them for the lowest parts of the space, such as the under-counter cabinets or the flooring. Paler shades in the top areas of the kitchen will produce a lighter atmosphere, whereas dark colours on upper cabinets can make a small kitchen feel claustrophobic. In fact, installing as few high cabinets as possible can assist in making the kitchen appear larger. You could install floor-to-ceiling cupboards and drawers on one wall only and leave the other walls free of high cabinets. In those areas, you could fit open shelves instead.

Efficient Drawers

Every millimetre of storage space must be used effectively in custom kitchens, especially in compact areas. Installing as many drawers as possible instead of cupboards is one way to do this. There is a lot of wasted air space above the items you store in a one-shelf cupboard. You can utilise all the vertical areas, however, by installing drawers of different depths. A deep drawer can store large saucepans, while shallower drawers can store cups and mugs. Drawers can also hold food items such as cans. High-quality runners and hardware will make sure they can carry a heavy load. Another advantage of drawers is that once you pull them out, it's easy to find stuff in the back.
