Getting the Most Out of Your General Contractor

If you are thinking about hiring a general contractor, you should read my blog before you pick up the phone or send that email. I am not a general contractor myself, but I have just finished restoring my home. It was a big project that involved working with multiple contractors over an extended period of time. Although I am not a professional, I learnt an awful lot about how to get the most out of a team of contractors and how to keep a project on schedule and under budget. I also learnt a thing or two about the work they were carrying out.

Three Reasons To Install A Retaining Wall In Your Garden

by Kurt Lawson

One way to upgrade your yard is to install a retaining wall. Bringing structural and aesthetic benefits, you can configure these barriers in various ways to organise your garden space. Here are three reasons to consider constructing one in your outdoor area.

Stabilises The Ground

On sloping gardens, rainwater rushes down the incline, lifting topsoil and nutrients as it goes. Over time, this degrades the quality of the earth. Additionally, as the rain doesn't have a chance to soak in, the landscape dries out. At the hill bottom, conversely, the ground can become waterlogged and boggy as mud shifts downwards. Sinkholes and other structural problems can result. A retaining wall that creates several tiers of flat earth out of one slope stabilises the landscape and resolves these problems.

Adds Decorative Appeal

A retaining wall introduces an appealing element to your yard. Natural stone, timber and decorative concrete are some of the possible materials with which you can sculpt your garden. You can fashion the barrier with an array of colours. Rocks, in a variety of shapes and sizes, provide dusky blues, earthy reds or sandy tans. Either use stones of a uniform palette or mix them up. Timber brings rustic charm, and concrete can mimic granite, bluestone or numerous other materials.

With such diversity at hand, you can harmonise the structure with the landscape using complementary hues, considering the surrounding foliage and your home's siding. Additionally, you can customise the route and size of your retaining wall to your heart's content. Introduce beautiful curves with a winding barrier, or create an angular structure using straight lines.

Creates More Usable Areas

On hilly terrain, many areas can become difficult to access and enjoy. Planting can be tricky, and sitting on an incline can be uncomfortable and awkward. By smoothing the ground, you increase the functionality of the entire yard. You can create zones for alfresco dining, play areas for children and other regions for planting.

Establish a luscious garden with beautiful flowers and bushes, or create a prolific vegetable plot full of organic produce which you can enjoy all year round. Why not incorporate a meditation terrace, forming a nook with a table and chairs, encircled with a natural stone wall? A bubbling water feature can evoke a calm ambience to help you relax and enjoy your haven. With the help of retaining walls, you can maximise a yard, turning what was once inaccessible into new functional expanses and gardens.
